As our nation engages in difficult dialogue surrounding race and equality, there is no better time to explore the work of writers of color. In the publishing world, people of color often struggle to get their work seen. According to a recent diversity in publishing survey by Lee & Low Books, 76% of publishing professionals identify as white.
However, in the YA genre, an increasing number of fantasy and sci-fi books have diverse casts and are written by people of color. We’ve compiled a list of our favorite YA Fantasy and Sci-Fi books, including the work of by Black members of YA Fantasy Addicts. If you desire to diversify your bookshelf this summer, consider these stories full of literal #blackgirlmagic and #blackboyjoy and support the creative work of authors of color.
